On the Ground: When I first entered the busy terminal, the lines for general assistance and premium check-in were not clearly separated and at times seemed to merge. I accidentally waited in the wrong line for about ten minutes before finding the correct queue. Once I was in the right place, both check-in and security moved quickly and without hassle. The new three-level Lufthansa lounge, located just past security, is well designed. The first level is dedicated to business-class passengers; I enjoyed a drink, a few light snacks and caught up on email while waiting. Large floor-to-ceiling windows provided excellent views of aircraft taxiing, taking off and landing. The second level, the Senator Lounge, features a staffed bar and seating for about 124 guests. The top floor is reserved for first-class passengers and HON Circle members, where travelers can relax or enjoy a meal in the dining area. Overall, the lounge experience felt modern and comfortable. Pre-flight: The lounge attendants were attentive and proactive, notifying me when boarding time approached so I didn’t have to wait at the gate or join a long line. Boarding was smooth and I settled into a first-row window seat. A fellow passenger kindly helped with my cabin bag as flight attendants offered drinks and magazines. The flight departed on time from the typically busy New York airport, and I relaxed with a book as we climbed out. Service in this phase was prompt and courteous. (29/30)
In-flight: Curious to sample the offerings from Lufthansa’s Star Chefs program, I started with a salad, followed by salmon and finished with cheese and fruit. The meal was satisfactory but not remarkable on the outbound flight. On the return, however, I tried a jambalaya prepared by a New Orleans-based Star Chef; it was outstanding and ranked among the best airplane meals I’ve experienced. I spent much of the flight chatting with my seatmate before deciding to rest. The business-class seats recline but do not fully flatten; the recline angle causes a slight sliding sensation when resting. I managed to sleep moderately well after watching a film from the selection available. Each seat includes a personal entertainment screen and noise-canceling headphones—earphone covers are provided in the amenity kit. The entertainment library included roughly a dozen movies plus TV shows, games and music. Flight attendants were helpful and attentive without being intrusive. (37/40)
The Experience: I was eager to try Lufthansa’s business class and left genuinely impressed. The lounge facilities, attentive pre-flight support and overall cabin service combined to make the journey comfortable and enjoyable. While seat design could be improved with fully flat beds, the food—particularly the Star Chef offering on the return—and professional service elevated the trip.
