Family-Friendly Adventures in Peru: Top Activities for Kids and Parents

Responding to growing interest in family-focused travel in Peru, Aracari Travel has designed two distinct itineraries tailored to families: one for those traveling with children up to 12 years old, and another for families with teenagers aged 13 and above.

Both itineraries combine adventurous experiences, cultural and educational visits, and chances to connect with local communities. The family program for younger children emphasizes immersive, hands-on activities that are engaging and age-appropriate. Highlights include a guided visit to the Amazon rainforest, treasure hunts, interactive weaving lessons, a chocolate workshop, fishing excursions, and a visit to iconic sites such as Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and Cusco.

The itinerary geared toward families with older children ramps up the adventure element. It features activities like surfing, mountain biking, hiking and driving sand buggies, along with visits to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and Cusco. Older kids can also extend their trip to explore the Nazca Lines, Lima and the Paracas National Reserve.

Across Peru, more family-friendly options have become widely available in recent years. Horseback riding, quad biking, hot-air ballooning and kayaking are now offered in many destinations, and short treks—day hikes and brief camping excursions—have grown in popularity because they are manageable for younger travelers while still delivering memorable outdoor experiences.

“When we first started in this business Peru was generally still a backpacker destination with very little to offer families, especially younger children,” said Marisol Mosquera, founder of Aracari Travel and mother of an 11-year-old. “These days almost a third of our groups are traveling with their families, which is incredibly exciting for me.”
