Etihad Airways has become the first carrier in the Middle East to take delivery of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Arriving earlier this month, the new aircraft wears a livery inspired by the region’s desert landscape and represents the first of 71 Dreamliners Etihad has on order—41 Boeing 787-9s and 30 Boeing 787-10s.
The 787-9 in Etihad’s configuration accommodates 280 passengers and will be deployed on long-haul routes from Abu Dhabi (AUH). Initial destinations for the new Dreamliner include Dusseldorf (DUS), Mumbai (BOM), Brisbane (BNE), Moscow (DME) and Washington, D.C. (IAD), allowing the airline to expand capacity and enhance passenger experience on those services.
“We are excited to see the 787 footprint grow in the Middle East with airlines such as Etihad Airways investing in the Dreamliner as part of their fleet strategy,” said Marty Bentrott, vice president of sales for Middle East, Russia and Central Asia, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. He added that Etihad’s investment in modern, innovative cabin interiors has already had a notable impact, and that the 787 will play a key role in delivering improved quality and operational efficiency.
Etihad’s acquisition of the 787-9 aligns with broader trends among global carriers seeking more fuel-efficient, long-range aircraft that offer enhanced passenger comfort. The Dreamliner family combines advanced aerodynamics, lightweight composite materials and improved systems to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while providing a quieter cabin and higher humidity levels—factors that contribute to a more comfortable flying experience on long international sectors.
For Etihad, the expanded Dreamliner fleet supports route development and scheduling flexibility, enabling the airline to match capacity to demand on a range of medium- and long-haul markets. The 787-9’s mix of range and seating capacity makes it suitable for both established trunk routes and newer city pairs that benefit from non-stop connections. As Etihad introduces more 787s, passengers can expect modern cabin features and a consistent onboard product across multiple long-haul markets.
Boeing’s delivery to Etihad also reinforces competitive dynamics in the region, where airlines are investing in next-generation aircraft to reduce operating costs and improve the travel experience. With this first 787-9 now in service, Etihad is positioned to continue refining its network strategy and enhancing services for travelers flying to and from Abu Dhabi.
