Through a partnership with fellow Star Alliance member Austrian Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines has expanded its European network by launching four-times-weekly service to Vienna (VIE). The new route from Addis Ababa (ADD) increases the carrier’s international network to 82 destinations across five continents.
The airline highlighted Vienna’s importance as a major center for conferences and conventions, noting that the new connection will meet growing travel demand between Africa and Austria. In addition to direct travel between Addis Ababa and Vienna, the partnership with Austrian Airlines will facilitate smoother connections between Africa and Central and Eastern Europe, enhancing connectivity for both business and leisure travelers.
Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, emphasized Europe’s continued significance as Africa’s largest trading partner and said the carrier is pleased to strengthen links to the region. The Vienna service supports the airline’s broader strategy to expand market access and provide efficient connections across continents.
The new route is part of Ethiopian Airlines’ ongoing network growth, which aims to increase options for passengers traveling between Africa and Europe while promoting economic and cultural ties. By coordinating schedules and services with a Star Alliance partner, the airline seeks to offer better onward connections and a more seamless travel experience for customers.
Ethiopian Airlines’ expansion into Vienna also reflects broader trends in air travel demand between Europe and Africa, where business, tourism and diplomatic traffic continue to rise. The addition of Vienna complements the carrier’s existing routes in Europe and contributes to its role as a pan-African hub, linking multiple African markets with international destinations.
