The Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia has honored Philadelphia International Airport with its Business & Arts Partnership Award in recognition of the airport’s long-running Exhibitions Program.
The award recognizes an exceptional collaboration between a major business and an arts or cultural organization. It highlights efforts that successfully bring art to broader audiences while strengthening ties between the business community and the region’s cultural institutions.
PHL established the Exhibitions Program in 1998 as a visual arts initiative designed to showcase Philadelphia’s rich cultural life and to improve the travel experience. Over the years the program has presented nearly 300 distinct exhibits featuring the work of individual artists, community arts organizations, and regional cultural institutions. Exhibits rotate through approximately 20 locations across the airport, providing travelers with access to a diverse mix of visual art and complementary educational programming.
“The airport is a perfect venue to showcase the amazing talents of Philadelphia’s artistic community, the region’s fascinating arts and cultural institutions, and Philadelphia’s unique culture,” said Mark Gale, CEO of Philadelphia International Airport. “Millions of travelers who may not have the chance to visit one of our renowned museums, art institutions, or galleries can get a feel for our region’s artistic and cultural vibrancy by viewing the exhibits at the airport.”
By placing curated exhibitions in public transit areas, the program expands audiences for local artists and institutions, fosters cultural exchange, and creates moments of discovery for passengers. The displays range from solo artist retrospectives to thematic group exhibitions and institutional showcases, often accompanied by informational materials or onsite signage that provide context and encourage further exploration of Philadelphia’s arts scene.
Partnerships with museums, galleries, nonprofit arts groups, and individual creators ensure a broad representation of media and perspectives. These collaborations also support educational goals, allowing traveling students, tourists, and residents to engage with visual arts outside traditional museum settings.
The recognition from the Arts & Business Council underscores how the Exhibitions Program aligns with broader efforts to integrate arts into public life and promote Philadelphia as a cultural destination. By leveraging the airport’s high visibility and steady flow of visitors, the program not only enriches the passenger experience but also raises awareness of the city’s vibrant creative community.
For travelers and locals alike, the airport exhibits offer an accessible way to encounter regional talent, discover new artists, and learn about the cultural institutions that shape Philadelphia’s identity. The program’s longevity and breadth of programming reflect a sustained commitment to arts engagement that benefits both the public and the participating cultural partners.
