Cornelia Spa at The Surrey Hotel — Luxury Spa in New York City

I spent a weekend in New York City with friends for a bachelorette celebration and started one morning with a restorative spa visit. The Cornelia Spa at The Surrey, located on the Upper East Side, offers a serene retreat from the city’s bustle and was the ideal place to recover after a lively night out.

I arrived early for my appointment, which gave me time to unwind before the treatment. Jonathan, the spa director, greeted guests and helped me settle in. While relaxing in the peaceful lounge, I enjoyed a cup of tea accompanied by lavender-glazed cookies and crystallized ginger, which set a calm tone for the rest of the day.

Cornelia Spa’s mission is to create tailored experiences that restore and revitalize mind, body and spirit. Their menu includes curated packages such as A Night on the Town, a three-hour beauty plan designed to prepare you for an evening in the city. For my visit I chose an oxygen renewal facial followed by a Somadome session, each designed to nourish and rejuvenate in complementary ways.

My therapist welcomed me to a dimly lit treatment room and began the facial with a small spoonful of artisanal honey. The honey provided gentle antibacterial and sensory benefits and was a soothing start. The oxygen renewal facial emphasizes nourishment and oxygenation to boost hydration and produce a natural lifting effect, aiming to leave skin refreshed and radiant.

As I lay back, the therapist worked with me to customize the experience and applied pressure tailored to my comfort level. The facial began with seaweed and sea mud enzymatic exfoliants to deeply cleanse pores. A caviar masque followed and was removed to reveal softer skin. While the masque set, an ocean-botanical hydrating serum was massaged into my neck, shoulders and chest, enhancing moisture and relaxation.

Next came a light layer of a liquid oxygen product topped with a thin gauze sheet. The therapist checked for claustrophobia beforehand; for most people the gauze is comfortable, but those who feel anxious in enclosed situations may wish to skip that step. After the gauze, a thicker oxygen enrichment masque was applied, delivering an intensive boost without weighing the skin down. To finish, a modern stem-cell serum was used to support skin renewal. When the facial concluded my skin felt dewy, taut and thoroughly replenished.

Back in the relaxation lounge I sipped another cup of tea and enjoyed a lemon poppy seed cupcake infused with Cornelia’s Super Food blend. Still calm from the facial, I made my way to the Somadome pod for a guided meditation session.

Somadome provides a personalized, 20-minute cocoon-like experience that guides users through a choice of meditations tailored to different needs. Cornelia Spa is among the first on the East Coast to offer Somadome, which combines sound, light and subtle therapeutic elements to create a focused meditative environment.

Meditation is associated with numerous benefits, including reduced blood pressure, improved mood, enhanced immune response, and increased focus. The Somadome integrates ambient sounds at varying frequencies and LED color therapy to support different states of mind. Microcrystalline tiles within the pod are designed to minimize electromagnetic interference. Different light colors are used intentionally: green to stimulate rejuvenation; dark blue to relieve headaches, high blood pressure and stress; light blue to ease stress and heighten intuition; violet to slow an overactive heart; and white to promote a sense of healing and elevated awareness.

Jonathan explained the session options and helped me choose. The Somadome offers eight programs: Love, which improves clarity and charisma and includes verbal guidance; Manifest, a verbally guided meditation aimed at attracting intentions; Heal, which supports the immune system; Overcome, to boost energy and metabolism; Succeed, designed to lift mood and self-esteem; Focus, to sharpen concentration; Recharge, which relieves tension and sparks creativity; and Relax, intended to calm the mind and release stress. Sessions can help the mind enter various brainwave states such as Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta.

I chose the Manifest session. Inside the cocoon, I adjusted the pillows, closed the lid and put on noise-canceling headphones. Somadome uses binaural beats—different frequencies delivered to each ear that produce a perceived beat in the brain—to support deep meditative states. Although I usually find it hard to maintain focus during meditation, the blend of ambient sound, soothing verbal guidance and color therapy held my attention. The experience felt grounding and inspiring; in the hours and days that followed I found myself revisiting the gentle phrases from the session.

When my appointment ended I left The Surrey and walked through the busy streets of Manhattan feeling unusually calm. The ease I experienced carried me home, and even the city’s heat and noise couldn’t shake that centered state.
