This new addition to Context’s New York City tour portfolio offers an architectural and social history walk along Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. Highlights include The Plaza Hotel, The Metropolitan Club, the Fletcher-Sinclair mansion, and other landmarks that reveal how wealth, taste, and power shaped the city during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While many Gilded Age mansions no longer survive, the tour focuses on those that remain and the stories they tell about New York’s elite.

The experience begins at The Plaza Hotel, where guides explain how successive renovations honored the original architectural vision. From there the route moves through Grand Army Plaza, an area notable for its Beaux-Arts architecture dating from 1916. Along the way, guests learn about the prestigious schools, social clubs, and private residences that defined Fifth Avenue life, tracing the footsteps of prominent families such as the Vanderbilts, Buchanans, and Roosevelts.

The tour continues to the Frick Mansion, built between 1912 and 1914, and concludes near the Ukrainian Institute of America—an elegant French Renaissance building designed by architect C.P.H. Gilbert. Throughout the walk, guides contextualize the architectural styles, patronage, and urban development that emerged during the Gilded Age, helping participants understand both the grandeur and the social consequences of that period.
