On the Ground: My trip to Belgium took place a few months after the tragic terrorist attacks at Brussels Airport in March 2016, so heightened security measures were obvious. Buses were required to drop passengers a short distance from the terminal entrance, which added a longer walk and an extra, ad hoc security screening before entry. I passed through that checkpoint without being pulled aside. After a brief wait to check in, I moved through the priority security lanes. The airport was busy, but operations were smooth and orderly despite the crowds.
Pre-Flight: I had planned to spend pre-flight time at The Loft lounge, but my flight departed from Terminal B and I was directed to The Suite lounge. Both lounges provide excellent experiences for premium travelers. The Suite holds more than 150 guests and was quite full on the morning of my visit. Once I found a seat, I helped myself to a light breakfast and a coffee and chatted with my travel companions until it was time to head to the gate. By the time I arrived, boarding was already underway and I used the priority lane to board quickly.
In-Flight: My flight left in the late morning and my aim was to stay awake during the flight so I could better adapt to the time change upon arrival in the United States. The lie-flat seats, equipped with integrated massage functions, made it tempting to nap. The overall in-flight product delivered what a business-class traveler expects: a large 15.3-inch touchscreen entertainment system with a wide selection of films and programs; a Star Chef menu; a curated selection of wines and beers; a well-stocked amenity kit; and attentive cabin service. I settled in to dine and watch films, including an old favorite, The Town, and I dozed briefly. Because the flight was longer than seven hours, a snack service complemented the main meal service.
TOP TAKEAWAYS
◆ If available, choose one of the “king seats” — the single seats in the 1-2-1 configuration — for extra space and greater privacy.
◆ The presentation of the snow crab snack and the sliced veal starter was especially attractive and well executed.
◆ After reaching cruising altitude, attendants set up a station at the front of the cabin where passengers could help themselves to chilled Champagne throughout the flight — a thoughtful touch.
◆ Each service features a Star Chef and a monthly wine and beer selection. The Star Chef on my flight was Dimitri Marit; I enjoyed the cod with a Parmesan crust and sampled the highlighted Blanche de Thines Belgian beer.
◆ Business-class passengers also receive a gift box of Neuhaus chocolates, a pleasant gesture that adds a final touch to the premium experience.
