British Airways Resumes Flights to Malta: Routes, Dates & What to Know

British Airways has announced the return of scheduled flights between London Heathrow (LHR) and Malta International Airport (MLA) starting next year. The airline first began flying to Malta in 1947 and last served the island in 2009. Service will resume daily to Luqa Malta International Airport from March 30, operated using a mix of aircraft including the Boeing 737, Airbus A319 and A320.

Peter Simpson, British Airways’ Gatwick director, said the relaunch marks a welcome return to Malta. He emphasized that the new timetable has been designed to appeal to both leisure travellers and passengers visiting friends and family, offering convenient departure and arrival times.

The reinstatement of the route strengthens connectivity between the UK and Malta, supporting tourism and personal travel links. Air service resumption often stimulates visitor numbers and provides greater choice for travellers seeking both short breaks and longer stays on the island.

Malta is known for its rich history, attractive Mediterranean climate and compact size, making it an appealing destination for a variety of travellers. Daily flights from London will offer flexibility for different travel plans, whether for weekend city breaks, cultural trips, or family visits.

With a combination of narrow-body aircraft on the route, British Airways aims to match capacity to demand across the season. The use of Boeing 737 and Airbus A319/A320 aircraft offers operators flexibility while maintaining frequent daily frequencies.

This announcement continues a trend of carriers restoring or expanding services to Mediterranean destinations as travel demand recovers. For passengers, the return of direct flights between London and Malta means simpler itineraries and more options when planning trips to the island.
