Bay Area Transit Route Updates: What Riders Need to Know

Significant schedule changes are coming for flights serving the busy Bay Area airports, including San Francisco (SFO), Oakland (OAK) and San Jose (SJC). Starting in 2019, several major carriers will reduce service on some existing routes while others introduce new transcontinental connections to and from these hubs.

On Aug. 25, Alaska Airlines’ regional operator, Horizon Air, discontinued service between San Jose and Eugene (EUG), Oregon. Horizon also ended flights from Portland (PDX), Oregon, to Bellingham (BLI) and Pasco (PSC), Washington, as part of a broader network realignment.

Effective Oct. 26, United Airlines will end its daily service between San Jose and Newark Liberty International Airport, citing low demand. Alaska Airlines will continue to serve transcontinental markets to the New York area, maintaining its San Jose–Newark alternative and operating the San Jose–New York John F. Kennedy International Airport route that launched in July.

In addition, United plans to discontinue service between San Francisco and Victoria (YYJ), British Columbia, beginning Jan. 7. These adjustments reflect shifting demand patterns and airlines’ efforts to optimize resources, providing opportunities for other carriers to expand or reconfigure offerings to better match passenger needs in and out of the Bay Area.
