Banyan Tree Enters Japan: 5 New Luxury Properties Open

Banyan Tree Group has announced its first expansion into Japan with five new properties across four concepts. The group’s partnership with Wealth Management Group brought Dhawa Yura Kyoto and Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto to market in June, with two additional openings planned through 2026. A separate collaboration with Terraform Capital will introduce Cassia in the Niseko ski area.

Dhawa Yura Kyoto opened on June 17 and sits beside Sanjo Ohashi, the historic bridge that was the final station on the old Tokaido Road leading from Tokyo. The hotel offers 138 rooms, each designed to reflect Kyoto’s history through interiors and curated artwork. Public spaces continue this storytelling approach, and 8lement Spa provides guests with a dedicated wellbeing experience.

Also opening June 17, Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto adopts a minimalist design focused on rest and renewal. With just 25 rooms, the property delivers a boutique, intimate atmosphere. The lobby frames serene greenery, while the hotel restaurant, Singular, presents inventive French cuisine. Guests can also use the Wellbeing Room for yoga and restorative exercises.

Planned to open in spring 2024, Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto will occupy a hilltop location with panoramic views over the city. This luxury urban resort is set to be the first hotel within Kyoto city limits to feature a Noh stage, offering a dedicated performance space designed to immerse audiences in traditional Japanese theater.

Cassia Hirafu is scheduled for 2025 and will be located in Niseko, one of Japan’s most sought-after ski destinations. The development will be minutes from the Hirafu ski slopes and include 50 hotel keys alongside 113 residential units ranging from one-bedroom apartments to villas available for purchase, catering to both short-stay guests and long-term residents.
