Amtrak to Modernize Acela Trains With Major Refurbishment Plan

Amtrak is investing $4 million to refresh the interiors of its Acela Express fleet over the next 10 months.

The national passenger railroad will install new carpeting, replace seat cushions and covers on all 100 Acela cars, and perform a thorough deep-clean of every car in service.

“Customers expect a premium experience when they board an Acela Express train, and these updated interior features provide a more comfortable, refreshed look and feel—whether you want to relax, move about freely, work or play,” said Amtrak CEO and President Richard Anderson.

The first refurbished trainsets returned to service last month, with additional cars introduced on a monthly basis through March 2019. Amtrak says the upgrades will be phased in without scheduled service interruptions.

Acela trains operate on high-speed routes along the Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C. Amtrak also plans to replace the entire Acela Express fleet by 2022 and begin testing the next generation of passenger train cars starting in 2019.
