Passengers traveling with sports equipment or musical instruments have reason to celebrate: American Airlines has sharply reduced its checked baggage fees for these items.
Where the carrier previously charged $150 for specialty items such as skis, surfboards and bicycles, the fee has been cut to $30 — the same price the airline charges for a first standard checked bag. Under the updated policy, each piece of sports gear or musical instrument will be treated as a single standard checked bag for fee purposes.
There are a few important limitations to note. Items weighing more than 50 pounds remain subject to additional oversize or overweight charges. Bulky or potentially hazardous equipment, including hang gliders and scuba tanks, continue to incur the prior $150 check fee. Passengers should also confirm size restrictions and packing requirements to avoid damage or additional handling charges.
The change took effect last month. American Airlines said the goal is to make it easier for customers to travel with the equipment they need to stay active or pursue hobbies while away from home.
Other carriers have made similar moves: last year, United Airlines reduced the fee for checked surfboards on California flights to $30. As airlines respond to passenger demand for simpler, more affordable options, travelers who frequently fly with gear should review each airline’s specific rules to understand weight limits, item types covered, and any remaining exceptions.
For best results, prepare equipment with appropriate protective cases, arrive at the airport early to allow extra time for check-in or gate-checking, and check your airline’s most current baggage policy before departure to avoid surprises at the counter.
