Alaska Airlines Launches Preferred Plus Seating for Extra Comfort

Alaska Airlines has introduced a new Preferred Plus seating option that gives travelers a paid path to extra legroom and other perks when bulkhead and exit row seats remain available after elite members have had their pick. The offering expands passengers’ choices for comfort while keeping priority access for frequent flyers enrolled in the carrier’s Mileage Plan.

Preferred Plus upgrades start at $15 plus tax and offer several tangible benefits. Passengers who purchase these seats receive up to eight inches of additional legroom, priority boarding, and a complimentary beverage such as a cocktail, glass of wine, or beer. The combination of space, boarding priority and a refreshment makes Preferred Plus an attractive option for customers who want added comfort without the higher cost of premium cabins.

Availability of Preferred Plus seats follows Alaska’s existing elite access policies. Mileage Plan MVP, MVP Gold and MVP Gold 75K members retain first access to bulkhead and exit row seats; once those customers have made their selections, any remaining Preferred Plus inventory becomes available for purchase by other travelers. This preserves the value of elite status while enabling non-elite customers to upgrade when space permits.

For most flights, Preferred Plus seats in rows such as six, 16 and 17 can be purchased beginning 24 hours prior to check-in. Travelers can buy the upgrade through the Alaska Airlines website, the airline’s mobile app, or at the airport. Elite members who are entitled to complimentary upgrades will continue to receive them from the time of booking through departure, ensuring that those with status maintain their benefits.

The new option is designed to be simple and flexible. Instead of committing to more expensive fare families or premium seating far in advance, customers can monitor seat availability and choose a Preferred Plus upgrade close to departure. This approach helps passengers tailor their travel experience based on need and budget while allowing Alaska to monetize remaining bulkhead and exit row inventory.

Preferred Plus is particularly useful for travelers on medium- and long-haul flights where a few extra inches of legroom and priority boarding can significantly improve comfort and the boarding experience. Families, taller passengers, and anyone who prefers a bit more personal space will find value in purchasing these seats when they are offered.

Alaska’s rollout keeps the airline’s longstanding practice of protecting elite members’ access to prime seating while offering a clear and affordable option for other passengers. By combining modest pricing, a complimentary beverage, and priority boarding, Preferred Plus aims to strike a balance between accessibility and the premium feel of upgraded seating.

Passengers interested in Preferred Plus should check their flight details within the 24-hour window prior to check-in to see if Preferred Plus seats are offered, and can complete purchases online, through the Alaska mobile app, or at the airport counter. Those with Mileage Plan elite status should continue to expect complimentary access to these seats as part of their benefits from booking through departure.
