Airport Art: Inspiring Installations and Where to See Them

If you have a long layover at Miami International Airport, make your way to the South Terminal to see the newest addition to the airport’s Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Program. WAYPOINT, a 110-inch video wall, presents short films and video art that include documentary-style profiles of the artists behind the work.

Co-developed by contemporary art filmmakers Wet Heat Project, the inaugural WAYPOINT programs explore local creative practice. The first series, “Miami Artists at Work,” spotlights South Florida artists such as Pablo Cano, Robert Chambers, Edourd Duval Carrié, Lynne Golob Gelfman, Gavin Perry, Ralph Provisero, TM Sisters, Jen Stark, Mette Tommerup, Frances Trombly and Michael Vasquez. Each artist was filmed in their studio during unscheduled visits between 2008 and 2011, capturing the atmosphere and techniques of their working process.

The second program, “Making Their Mark,” features two short films that document New World School of the Arts students as they plan, fabricate and install large-scale public art projects, illustrating the collaboration, problem-solving and craftsmanship involved in bringing ambitious artworks to public sites.

“WAYPOINT adds an exciting new dimension to our fine arts program at MIA by giving travelers a glimpse into how artists create work,” said Yolanda Sánchez, Ph.D., director of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Division. “It’s like an open window into the making of contemporary art. Future programs will include site-specific video pieces tailored to the airport environment.”

WAYPOINT is installed near Gate J-7 in the South Terminal, offering passengers a compact, accessible gallery experience while they wait.
