Air-Inclusive and All-Inclusive Cruises: Stress-Free Vacation Packages

Rate shock. Surprise costs. Expense disappointment. Call it what you will, but it’s what happens when you choose a seemingly lower-cost cruise without accounting for the many “extras” that aren’t included. From airfare and alcohol to soft drinks, shore excursions and gratuities, small charges accumulate quickly and can substantially inflate the final bill. Even after a delightful voyage, that unexpected total can cloud the memory. For a truly seamless trip, consider not only an all-inclusive cruise but also a cruise fare that includes or offers an air package.

No luxury traveler wants to count pennies on a cruise — or feel nickel-and-dimed after paying a premium fare to sail. “Luxury, all-inclusive cruise lines provide value and ease of travel, so you don’t have to worry about anything except enjoying your holiday,” said Becky Robinson, cruise expert and luxury travel advisor at Departure Lounge. “All-inclusive and air-inclusive cruises might seem more expensive at first, but once you add in all the extras (gratuities, drinks, WiFi, etc.), the final price is often very similar.” Robinson adds that smaller cruise lines frequently deliver higher-quality, all-inclusive amenities and programs, and she praises them for offering a more relaxed, elegant and intimate experience.

Regarding air-inclusive cruise fares, Robinson notes that only a handful of cruise lines still offer them. Some lines provide a Door-to-Door fare that includes economy air with upgrade options, others sell add-on air packages, and a few run promotions that include airfare on select routes and dates. Robinson recommends shopping for promotions that include air when selecting a cruise. “If you book one of those promotions, you should seriously consider the included air option,” she said. “Though the included airfare is typically economy, you can often upgrade to discounted business or premium economy. If you accept included air, be prepared to be flexible and to book the flights through the cruise line.”

These airfares are governed by contracts between airlines and cruise lines, so you may not receive the most direct routing or the specific carrier you prefer.

Explora Journeys, launched in 2021 to redefine luxury at sea, offers upscale travelers a sophisticated yet relaxed cruise experience to some of the world’s most desirable ports. With a yacht-like design and high-end partnerships, these ships include a wide range of amenities: multiple dining venues, unlimited fine beverages, thermal spa access, shuttle service from port to city center, a welcome bottle of Champagne, in-room refreshments, a room wine or spirit selection, high-speed WiFi for several devices, all onboard gratuities, fitness and wellness programs, and intuitive service. Explora’s Sky & Sea fare provides customized international and domestic economy-class flight arrangements (with upgrade options), hotel stays when required, private transfers and more.

Silversea delivers refined service on smaller, elegant ships featuring ocean-view suites and private verandas. Onboard offerings span a culinary S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) program, cooking demonstrations and social games. All fares include food and beverage (including alcohol), WiFi and personalized butler service, and many suites offer 24/7 caviar and bespoke mini-bars. Certain fares also include selected shore excursions. Silversea’s Door-to-Door fare is comprehensive, and specific itineraries, such as Galápagos expeditions or Antarctica fly-cruises, include charter flights.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises specializes in truly all-inclusive luxury, where one fare covers fine wines and spirits, non-alcoholic beverages, specialty restaurants, all onboard meals, pre-paid gratuities and included shore excursions. For example, Regent’s Ultimate All-Inclusive Fares allow guests to book round-trip flights in the air class of their choice, delivering a smooth, single-vendor travel experience on extended itineraries such as the 24-night West Africa Passage from Cape Town to Barcelona.

Cunard, home to the historic ocean liner Queen Mary 2, upholds grand, British-inspired cruising traditions such as formal balls and lavish afternoon tea. Cunard offers air-inclusive choices like the Cunard Complete Air Program, which lets guests book both cruise and airfare with Cunard, and Cunard Private Air, which provides private-jet transfers to or from ports for travelers seeking the utmost in convenience and luxury.

Ponant Explorations brings a distinctly French sensibility to small-ship cruising, combining refined service, gastronomy, Champagne and environmental awareness. Ponant often includes complimentary airfare or a post-cruise experience on select itineraries, adding flexibility for travelers who want a premium, culturally attuned voyage.
