Just north of Puerto Vallarta, the Riviera Nayarit region is celebrated for its natural beauty and picturesque towns along Mexico’s Pacific coast. With pristine beaches, lush jungle teeming with wildlife, vibrant villages and a rich culinary scene, it’s a fantastic destination for both relaxation and exploration.
The colorful town of Sayulita, known for its laid-back surf culture, is a must-visit in Riviera Nayarit. Whether you stop by for an afternoon to browse unique shops and enjoy lively restaurants or bring the family for lessons at Sayulita Surf School, it’s a place many visitors return to. If you like Sayulita’s eclectic vibe, consider heading about 30 minutes south to Bucerías. Its artisanal market operates from November through April, but the town’s charming plaza, beautiful beaches and year-round shopping and dining make it worth visiting anytime.
For underwater adventures, book a boat tour to the protected Marietas Islands to snorkel amid abundant marine life and swim through the rock tunnel to the famed Hidden Beach. Reaching the beach requires a bit of physical effort, but alternative island tours are available for those preferring a gentler outing.

Los Arcos, another protected marine park just off Puerto Vallarta, is filled with colorful fish and occasional sea turtles, making it ideal for relaxed snorkeling in a dramatic setting. If you visit between December and March, you can also go whale-watching in Banderas Bay, where humpback whales migrate from as far north as Alaska and Canada to calve in warmer waters.
On land, get a unique perspective of the Sierra Madre Mountains with a zip-lining tour over jungle and rivers, or explore the coastline on horseback with guided rides. Both activities are family-friendly and suitable for most skill levels, as are many experiences across the region.
Riviera Nayarit is also a golf destination, offering more than a dozen high-quality courses, including several of the country’s best. While some resort courses are private, most are open to the public, so you can easily spend several days golfing without traveling far.
Beach lovers will find sandy stretches throughout the region, and San Blas stands out for its extensive shoreline. Its 25 miles of beaches include Borrego Beach, a nearly 2-mile stretch ideal for sunbathing and swimming in warm, calm waters suitable for all ages. You’ll also find many good restaurants nearby — a common feature across Riviera Nayarit.
