California’s Pebble Beach Company has announced the schedule for a major renovation of The Links at Spanish Bay. The course will close on March 18, 2026, and is scheduled to reopen in spring 2027, several months before the U.S. Open returns to Pebble Beach Golf Links for its seventh appearance.

During the closure, Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner and Hanse Golf Course Design will lead the reconstruction with the goal of elevating the 40-year-old course to the same standard as the championship layouts elsewhere in the Del Monte Forest. The design team intends to reimagine Spanish Bay — originally conceived as a 1980s Scottish-inspired links — into a contemporary California coastal course while remaining within the existing development footprint. The renovation will also focus on strengthening the course’s environmental performance and modernizing infrastructure to serve future generations of golfers.
“Working with Pebble Beach Company in a world-class setting like this is a can’t-miss opportunity for our team,” said Gil Hanse, president and lead designer at Hanse Golf Course Design. “Golf on the Monterey Peninsula is an unrivaled experience, and we are excited to put our stamp on one of the most spectacular backdrops in the world.”

Hanse Golf Course Design brings a strong portfolio of North American projects, including acclaimed courses at Ladera and Lake Merced, Los Angeles Country Club (North), Ohoopee Match Club and PGA Frisco (East). Their experience with high-profile layouts informs the careful approach to improving playability, routing, and visual character at Spanish Bay.
“The focus of this project is to further enhance the golf experience at Pebble Beach Resorts,” said David Stivers, CEO of Pebble Beach Company. “Partnering with Gil, Jim, and their team gives us the utmost confidence that Spanish Bay will be a must-play course, on par with its fellow resort layouts.”

The renovation scope also includes rebuilding the iconic Spanish Bay boardwalk, which was damaged by recent storms. The boardwalk offers public coastal access and sweeping views between the golf course and the beach, and its reconstruction will begin this spring.
Overall, the project seeks to honor the natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula while updating course features, environmental practices and infrastructure. When complete, The Links at Spanish Bay will aim to provide a refreshed coastal golf experience that complements the storied courses of Pebble Beach Resorts and stands as an essential stop for visitors and members alike.
