Ulsan Temples and Parks Guide: Top Sacred Sites & Scenic Parks

Ranking as the seventh-largest city in South Korea, Ulsan still offers abundant natural attractions and historical sites. Begin on the east coast at Daewangam Park, once called Ulki Park. Its name, meaning “great king’s rock,” refers to a prominent natural rock formation by the sea. The park sits near Ilsan Beach and is reached by a one-kilometer path that winds through a scenic forest of pine, cherry, magnolia and camellia trees, along with apricot and forsythia blossoms in season.

From there, travel south of Gajisan to Seoknamsa Temple. Originally built in 842 and reconstructed in 1674, the temple features a notable three-story pagoda attributed to the monk Doui; the pagoda is recognized as a National Treasure. The area around Seoknamsa offers a network of hiking trails leading to Ssal Rock, Gajisan Mountain and Eoksan Mountain. Further south along a rugged forest path you will find Paraeso Falls, a rewarding destination for visitors who come prepared with sturdy walking shoes.

Off the beaten path, Hongryu Falls near Sinbulsan Mountain is a striking spot, known for dramatic cliff formations and a particularly spectacular display in spring when sunlight and mist create rainbow effects in the cascading water.

Bangudae Cliff, another officially designated National Treasure, is famous for prehistoric rock paintings and a cliff profile said to resemble a giant sleeping turtle. To deepen your understanding of the region’s past, visit the Ulsan Petroglyph Museum, which showcases ancient carvings and local archaeological finds. Nearby, the Seosaengpo Japanese Fortress offers a glimpse into later historical conflicts: built at the start of the Imjinwaeran war in the 16th century, the stone fortress is arranged in three parts—one at the mountain summit, a second midway on the slope, and a third at the mountain’s base.

Whether your interests lie in scenic coastal walks, temple architecture, waterfalls or archaeological sites, Ulsan provides a diverse mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage ideal for day trips and longer explorations.
