Iconic Melbourne Landmark Transformed: Hotel and Contemporary Art Hub

Celebrating its 130th anniversary, The Hotel Windsor — Melbourne’s grand dame of hotels — will host Luminescence, an exhibition featuring work by artists from the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne. Running from July 26 to September 5, the exhibition examines varied interpretations of “luminosity” through installations and artworks that respond to and inhabit the hotel’s historic interior, including ceilings, fireplaces, stairways, windows and corridors.

Inside the hotel, participating artists will adapt their pieces to the architecture and period detailing, creating site-specific work that draws attention to light, reflection and atmosphere. These interventions aim to reveal new ways of seeing familiar spaces, prompting visitors to reconsider the interplay between art and heritage interiors. The program emphasizes subtlety as well as dramatic effects, with some installations offering intimate encounters in smaller rooms and other works transforming larger public areas.

Outside, a team of leading Australian lighting designers will stage a curated illumination of the hotel’s façade. This exterior presentation will accentuate architectural features and create a dynamic nighttime display that complements the interior exhibition. Together, indoor and outdoor elements form a coherent exploration of luminosity across the building’s fabric.

The event also introduces The Windsor Art Award, a AUD 10,000 scholarship to be awarded to a winning artist. The prize aims to support emerging creative practice and provide the recipient with resources to further develop their work. Announcing the scholarship within the exhibition context strengthens the connection between contemporary art education and public presentation.

Curators have prioritized access and engagement, arranging the artworks so visitors can move through the hotel and experience a sequence of light-focused moments. The historic setting encourages dialogue between contemporary art and heritage conservation, offering audiences both visual delight and a deeper appreciation of craftsmanship and design traditions embedded in the building.

Additionally, the program is designed to appeal to a broad audience, from local residents and students to international visitors interested in Melbourne’s cultural life. Guided tours, interpretive materials and timed visits are likely to help manage flow through the hotel while allowing people to fully engage with each installation.

Luminescence positions The Hotel Windsor not only as a landmark of Melbourne hospitality but also as a living exhibition space where architecture and contemporary art meet. By opening its interiors to this creative project, the hotel and the University of Melbourne invite visitors to experience a familiar institution in an entirely new light.
