To mark Earth Month, passengers flying aboard United Airlines’ specially painted Eco-Skies Boeing 737-900ER (#432) will travel carbon neutral. Through United’s Eco-Skies CarbonChoice program, the airline purchased carbon offsets to cover emissions from every passenger and crew member on each flight operated by this aircraft.
As part of its sustainability upgrades, the Eco-Skies aircraft also features fuel-saving Split Scimitar winglets. These aerodynamic enhancements improve fuel efficiency compared with traditional winglets, further reducing the plane’s carbon footprint.
United gives customers the option to purchase CarbonChoice offsets when checking in online or at any time before or after travel. MileagePlus members can also redeem miles to obtain offsets by visiting the CarbonChoice section on United’s website.
Carbon offsets are one tool among many that airlines and travelers can use to address aviation emissions. When combined with operational improvements, aircraft retrofits, and investments in sustainable aviation fuels and other technologies, offsets can help reduce the net climate impact of air travel.
For travelers who want to lower their environmental impact, consider these practical steps in addition to purchasing offsets:
- Choose nonstop flights when possible—takeoffs and landings account for a disproportionate share of a flight’s emissions.
- Pack light to reduce aircraft weight and fuel use.
- Enroll in frequent-flyer programs that offer sustainable options or let you use miles to fund environmental initiatives.
- Support carriers that invest in fuel-efficiency upgrades, newer aircraft, and sustainability programs.
By combining individual choices with airline-led initiatives like the Eco-Skies CarbonChoice program and fuel-saving winglets, travelers can contribute to a more sustainable future for aviation while continuing to fly.
