South African Airways and Hawaiian Airlines have launched a new interline agreement that creates more convenient travel options between the Hawaiian Islands and South Africa. The arrangement simplifies connections for travelers on routes served by both carriers.
Under the agreement, passengers can book a single ticket that combines flights from both airlines and benefit from interline baggage transfer when checking in with either South African Airways or Hawaiian Airlines in the United States or southern Africa. This means smoother connections and fewer hassles with luggage during multi-carrier itineraries.
“This new interline partnership enables SAA and Hawaiian Airlines to broaden their route networks to provide some of the fastest connections between Hawai’i and destinations throughout Africa,” said Todd Neuman, executive vice president, Americas, South African Airways. He added that travelers will experience the warm hospitality for which both South African and Hawaiian carriers are known throughout their journey.
The partnership is effective immediately. Customers can now purchase combined itineraries that link Hawaiian’s neighbor-island network through New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) with South African Airways’ network of more than 75 destinations. As a key North American gateway for SAA, JFK’s daily nonstop service to South Africa helps create efficient connections between the islands and the African continent.
Sample schedules highlight the convenience of the connection: Hawaiian Airlines departs Honolulu (HNL) for Johannesburg (JNB) with a routing that arrives at JFK at 6:55 a.m. the following day after a 3:10 p.m. departure from HNL. South African Airways’ JFK departure follows at 11:15 a.m., arriving in Johannesburg at 8:05 a.m. the next morning.
On the return journey, flights from Johannesburg to Honolulu depart JNB at 9:00 p.m., arriving at JFK at 6:40 a.m. Hawaiian Airlines then operates the JFK–Honolulu leg departing around 10:00 a.m. and arriving in Honolulu at approximately 3:05 p.m. These timed connections are designed to minimize layover time while providing reliable transfer options.
The interline agreement expands choices for travelers making long-haul and island-to-continent trips by combining the strengths of both carriers: Hawaiian’s intra-island and transpacific experience and South African Airways’ extensive African network. Passengers are advised to confirm schedules and ticketing details when booking, as times and services may vary seasonally.
