British Airways Announces New Direct Route: What Travelers Need to Know

British Airways has announced a new service linking London City Airport (LCY) with Düsseldorf Airport (DUS). The airline will operate the route three times daily beginning September 1, using Saab 2000 aircraft configured with 50 seats. Scheduled departures from London City are set for 6:35 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., with return flights from Düsseldorf departing at 7:35 a.m., 2:25 p.m. and 6:55 p.m.

British Airways says the new connection responds to strong demand for direct business links between the two cities. “We have launched a number of new leisure routes from London City in the past couple of years. Now we are very excited to be going to a great business city like Düsseldorf which offers significant trade links with the city of London,” said Luke Hayhoe, general manager of British Airways at London City. The schedule aims to provide convenient options for both morning and afternoon business travel, while also supporting leisure travelers and those connecting via London City.

The Saab 2000 is a fast turboprop aircraft well suited to short-haul city services, offering efficient operations and a comfortable cabin for up to 50 passengers. By using this type of aircraft, the carrier can maintain frequent departures while matching capacity to demand on the route. Frequent daily rotations are intended to offer flexibility for corporate travelers and commuters, enabling same-day return trips and a range of onward connections through London City.

This new route follows British Airways’ recent expansion from London City, which included several leisure-focused destinations. The addition of Düsseldorf reflects a shift toward enhancing business-oriented connections while maintaining options for leisure and regional travelers. Düsseldorf, as a major economic and financial center in Germany with strong ties to the UK, is likely to attract corporate traffic as well as visitors attending trade fairs, conferences and cultural events.

Travelers considering the new service can expect the typical amenities and service standards associated with British Airways short-haul flights. The carefully timed departures provide morning and afternoon travel windows that suit business schedules, while the evening rotation supports return travel for those completing day trips. The airline’s choice of aircraft and frequency underlines a focus on reliability and convenience for passengers traveling between these two important European cities.
