Recognized as one of Germany’s oldest folk festivals, The Drachenstich, or Slaying of the Dragon festival, takes place every August in the town of Furth im Wald in the Bavarian Forest. This centuries-old tradition stages the dramatic rescue of a medieval village from a dragon attack and draws visitors from across the region to witness its spectacular pageantry.
Furth im Wald is often called the “City of Dragons,” and for good reason: the festival features an enormous, high-tech dragon designed with advanced pyrotechnics and special effects. Built to impress, the dragon is one of the largest robot creatures of its kind. It moves at a deliberate pace of nearly one mile per hour, stands more than 14 feet tall, measures almost 50 feet in length, and spreads wings that reach about 52 feet across. The mechanical creature’s lifelike motions and dramatic effects are a central highlight of the reenactment.
The Drachenstich is a community event on a grand scale. Each year roughly 1,400 participants and some 250 horses take part in the performances, creating a vivid historical tableau that brings the Middle Ages to life. The festival program typically includes around 10 staged dragon-slaying scenes, allowing spectators multiple opportunities to experience the climactic moment when the dragon is defeated.
Beyond the main dramatization, the festival offers a lively medieval market where traditional crafts, foods, and period entertainment are on display. Visitors can stroll among stalls that showcase local artisans, sample regional specialties, and enjoy demonstrations of historical crafts. A historically themed procession adds further color to the event, with costumed participants parading through town to celebrate local heritage.
Complementing the historical program is a classic German volksfest atmosphere, complete with a beer garden and social gatherings. Families and visitors of all ages can relax with seasonal treats, music, and convivial company while soaking up the festive ambiance that surrounds the reenactments and market activities.
The Drachenstich remains a living tradition that combines theatrical spectacle, community involvement, and local history. Its mixture of cutting-edge mechanical design and authentic medieval staging makes it a distinctive cultural event and a highlight of the Bavarian summer calendar. This year’s festival runs from August 5–21 and features a full schedule of performances and events for visitors to enjoy.
