Peru, home to more than 700 bird species, is a true destination for birdwatchers. In June, ornithologists and birding teams from around the globe will gather in the north of the country for the second Birding Rally Challenge.
The event runs from June 9–20. During that period, expert birders will travel through Peru’s northern lowlands competing to record the greatest number of species. International teams from the United States, Great Britain, South Africa, Spain and Brazil will survey diverse habitats across the Lambayeque, Cajamarca, Amazonas and San Martín regions.
Organized by Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism together with Inkaterra and Promperu, this June rally builds on the success of the inaugural Birding Rally Challenge held in late 2012. The competition showcases Peru’s rich avian biodiversity while promoting ecotourism and regional conservation efforts.
Routes during the rally will include coastal dry forests, Andean foothills and humid montane forests, giving participants access to a broad range of species and ecosystems. Local guides and specialists typically assist visiting teams, helping them locate endemic and rare birds while sharing knowledge about habitat protection and sustainable tourism practices.
Beyond the competition, the rally provides opportunities for scientific observation and community engagement. Participants often contribute valuable sightings and photographic records that support conservation research, and events like this raise awareness of the importance of preserving Peru’s birdlife and natural habitats.
Following the June event, organizers are planning a third Birding Rally Challenge for the fall of 2013, continuing the momentum of these international birding gatherings.
