Top Asian Countries With the Most Powerful Passports, According to Index

According to the Henley Passport Index, Japan currently holds the most powerful passport in the world, allowing its citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 190 destinations. Close behind, in second place, are Singapore and South Korea, each granting access to 189 destinations. Germany and France follow in third place, with passports that provide entry to 188 destinations.

The United States ranks sixth, with U.S. passports permitting travel to 185 destinations without a prior visa, the same number as United Kingdom passports. Both the U.S. and the U.K. previously occupied the top spot in 2015.

While the U.S. and U.K. have slipped in the rankings, several other countries have been gradually climbing. China, for example, ranked 85th in 2017 with visa-free access to just 51 destinations; it has since improved to 69th place, offering access to 74 countries.

“Historical data from the Henley Passport Index over the past 14 years shows an overwhelming global tendency towards visa-openness. In 2006, a citizen, on average, could travel to 58 destinations without needing a visa from the host nation; by the end of 2018, this number had nearly doubled to 107,” said Christian H. Kälin, group chairman of Henley & Partners.

The index highlights broader trends in international mobility and diplomatic relations: nations that invest in bilateral agreements and streamlined entry policies tend to improve their passport strength over time. Improvements in passport rankings often reflect expanded tourism cooperation, economic partnerships, and reciprocal visa arrangements, which collectively increase the number of destinations available without advance visas.

For travelers, a stronger passport means greater flexibility and fewer administrative hurdles for short trips, business travel, and tourism. However, rankings can change due to geopolitical shifts, security concerns, or changing immigration policies, so travelers should still verify entry requirements before planning any journey.

Overall, the Henley Passport Index provides a useful snapshot of global travel freedom and how it evolves as countries negotiate access and update their border policies. The recent movement in rankings underscores how diplomatic efforts and policy changes can directly affect citizens’ ability to travel internationally with ease.
