Celebrate Austrian Beer Culture: Local Festivals & Events to Attend

Heading to Austria? Arrive thirsty and satisfy your taste buds with a stein of local beer. Salzburg residents have been raising their glasses since Stiegl Bier opened the city’s first brewery in 1492. Beer culture is a thriving institution in this riverside city, with four breweries and a wide selection of beer gardens and lively pubs.

One of the city’s most famous spots is the Augustiner Bräustübl, Austria’s largest beer garden, which dates back to the 17th century. It features a spacious interior hall and outdoor seating for around 1,400 people. Traditional wooden barrels are used to tap beer, which pairs perfectly with hearty local fare such as sausages, cured fish, peppery radishes and soft pretzels. The atmosphere is convivial and often accompanied by live music and community celebrations.

If your visit coincides with late August, don’t miss the Augustiner Bräu Mülln festival, held from Aug. 28–30. The event blends excellent beer and regional food with lots of live music, creating a festive environment that highlights Salzburg’s longstanding brewing traditions. Whether you prefer a quiet table in a cozy pub or the lively buzz of a beer garden, Salzburg offers authentic Austrian beer experiences that appeal to locals and visitors alike.
