Urban Oasis: Downtown LA’s Top Relaxation Spots & Hidden Gardens

Originally opened in 1926 as a safe haven for women travelers, Hotel Figueroa in downtown Los Angeles honors the city’s layered past while offering modern comforts. After a two-year, $30 million renovation, the Spanish Colonial–style property has been thoughtfully restored and updated, with the refreshed hotel scheduled to reopen in late fall.

img 80416 1The 268-room, Mediterranean-inspired resort blends historic character with contemporary amenities. Public spaces include a large lobby designed for socializing, an outdoor pool framed by a lush garden, two dining outlets—such as Breva, a Spanish-inspired restaurant led by chef Casey Lane—and Veranda, an elegant al fresco dining spot. Guests can choose from five bars, including the reservations-only Bar Alta and Rick’s, which focuses on coastal cocktails.

The hotel’s Mediterranean influences extend beyond the menu to the décor and ambiance. The lobby bar offers tapas and Spanish wine in a stylish setting. The outdoor pool sits within a garden oasis of palms, eucalyptus and fig trees, creating a tranquil escape in the heart of downtown. Guestrooms are designed with calming tones and thoughtful details to support restful stays.

Among the accommodations, the Parador Suite is the largest, featuring a separate dining area, wet bar, living room, terrace and a private stairway that provides direct access to the bar and pool below. The 33 Writer Series suites celebrate downtown L.A.’s creative spirit with elements such as leather headboards with a raw edge, vintage-style furnishings and locally sourced artwork that reflect the neighborhood’s artistic energy.

Situated at the center of Los Angeles’s cultural and entertainment district, Hotel Figueroa sits across from L.A. Live and the arena at the Staples Center, and is adjacent to the Los Angeles Convention Center. The location places guests within easy reach of the Los Angeles Music Center, The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Broad Museum, making the hotel a convenient base for both business and cultural exploration.

Hotel Figueroa is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World and is recognized as Los Angeles’ first urban resort, combining historic significance with resort-style amenities in a metropolitan setting.
