Icelandair has launched a new North American gateway in Detroit, Michigan. The seasonal service begins on May 18, 2023, offering non-stop flights from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) to Keflavik International Airport (KEF) in Reykjavik. The route operates four times weekly through October 30, 2023.
Flight 872 departs Detroit for Reykjavik on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 8:30 p.m. on a 160-seat Boeing 737 MAX. The return leg from Reykjavik to Detroit departs at 5:00 p.m. on the same days and arrives in Detroit at 6:25 p.m.
“Icelandair is pleased to offer Detroit a refreshing new choice when traveling to Iceland and beyond. Icelandair’s DTW service will allow passengers to travel to and from Europe in new, fuel-efficient aircraft with modern amenities, including gate-to-gate Wi‑Fi and in-flight entertainment available for all passengers,” said Bogi Nils Bogason, president & CEO of Icelandair Group. “These new flights will not only help meet the demands of a growing Detroit but also offer more options for Midwestern business and leisure travelers connecting from the region. We look forward to welcoming Detroit aboard.”

The flight time is roughly six hours, and from Keflavik passengers can connect to more than 25 destinations across Iceland, Greenland, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and continental Europe. Icelandair also continues to promote its Stopover in Iceland program, which allows travelers to add up to seven nights in Iceland at no additional airfare when connecting through Reykjavik.
“Thanks to Icelandair, the beauty of Iceland is now a short flight away from Detroit,” said Chad Newton, CEO of the Wayne County Airport Authority. “At Detroit Metropolitan Airport, we know our customers have a choice when they fly. We believe nonstop flights to Iceland and the opportunity to connect to exciting cities throughout Europe are two more reasons travelers will choose DTW.”
