A recent study by Expedia.com reveals a clear shift among American adults: many are choosing to prioritize travel over purchasing material goods like clothing, jewelry, and electronics.
According to the survey, 74 percent of U.S. respondents said they would prefer to spend spare change on experiences rather than products. That preference is particularly strong among younger generations. Sixty-five percent of millennials are currently saving specifically for travel, and nearly half of them said they would sell clothing or furniture to free up funds for trips. Among Gen Z, 71 percent said they would take a part-time job to afford a leisure getaway.
The research also highlights the influence of social media on travel decisions for younger travelers. More than one-third (36 percent) of Gen Z respondents reported choosing a destination after seeing it on social platforms. Nearly 20 percent indicated they stayed at a particular hotel or visited a specific place because they expected it to perform well on social media.
“Insights into younger generations’ preferences are as good as a crystal ball, and currently their trends are pointing toward a great future for the travel space,” said Sarah Gavin, vice president of global communications at Expedia, Inc. “Understanding what travelers of all ages prioritize is key, but the growing passion for travel among younger generations drives us to focus on customer-centric solutions—offering competitive deals and the convenience of booking everything in one place.”
