Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates experienced a record influx of international visitors in 2018.
That year, Abu Dhabi welcomed more than 10 million international visitors, continuing strong growth that began in 2016. Between 2016 and 2018 the emirate saw hotel guest numbers rise by 13.62 percent, reflecting a sustained upward trend.
Growth was driven by a broad range of tourism sectors, including cultural attractions, business travel, family holidays and medical tourism. Cruise arrivals also contributed significantly, with more than 350,000 cruise passengers visiting the capital.
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi reported that the 10 million visitors included both overnight guests and day-trippers. Hotel stays continued to climb as well, with hotel guest numbers increasing by 3.94 percent in 2017. Each year in that period set new records for hotel occupancy and visitor arrivals.
“We are incredibly pleased to see these positive metrics, as year on year we have exceeded the already ambitious targets set for Abu Dhabi’s growth,” said Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi.
This steady expansion reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a key gateway for travelers exploring the United Arab Emirates and the wider Middle East.
“The past three years have seen countless significant additions to Abu Dhabi’s structural, touristic and cultural landscape. Most prominent among these are the reopening of the Al Hosn cultural site, which now offers visitors fresh experiences of heritage and artistic creativity, and the striking Louvre Abu Dhabi,” added Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak.
Major events also play a role in drawing international audiences. Since its debut in 2009, the annual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has attracted millions of spectators, further boosting hotel occupancy, dining and entertainment sectors across the city.
Overall, the combination of expanded cultural offerings, signature events, diversified tourism services and improved infrastructure helped Abu Dhabi secure its strongest visitor numbers to date in 2018, positioning the capital for continued growth in the years that followed.
