Prado Museum Madrid Unveils New Exhibitions in Stunning Setting

Heading to Madrid? The Museo Nacional del Prado is presenting several notable exhibitions that span from Michelangelo to Picasso. Running through June 28 in the Jerónimos Building is a focused display of religious works by the Flemish master Rogier van der Weyden, featuring highlights such as The Crucifixion, The Descent from the Cross and The Durán Virgin. The museum will host a symposium on this exhibition on May 5 and 6.

Also on view until Sept. 14 is Ten Picassos from the Kunstmuseum Basel, a temporary loan while the Kunstmuseum remains closed for renovation, offering viewers a compact but rich survey of Picasso’s output drawn from the Swiss collection.

From March 31 through June 28 the Villanueva Building displays Michelangelo’s marble sculpture The Young Saint John the Baptist. The statue, which suffered vandalism and damage during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, underwent careful restoration at the Florence Restoration Centre. Conservators used advanced techniques, including laser cleaning to remove burn marks, to recover the sculpture’s original surface. Following the Prado presentation, the work will return permanently to its home in Úbeda, in Andalusia.
