Viking Cruises has introduced a new winter ocean itinerary that gives guests the chance to experience Norway’s far north during prime Aurora Borealis season.
Departing in January 2019 between London and Bergen, the “In Search of the Northern Lights” voyage makes Viking the first U.S.-market cruise line to offer a full-length Arctic Circle itinerary during the winter months.
“Our Nordic heritage is evident in all that we do, from our spirit of exploration to the serene, understated elegance of our ships. Scandinavia is Viking territory, and no other cruise line can show guests this part of the world like we can,” said Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking Cruises. “Norway’s winter landscapes are truly magnificent — an experience many North Americans rarely see.”
The 930-guest Viking Sky provides a refined onboard environment tailored to travelers who value history, art, music and cuisine. Marketed by the company as a “thinking person’s cruise,” the ship emphasizes longer port calls and overnight stays so guests can explore more deeply. Its interiors draw on authentic Scandinavian design for a calm, sophisticated atmosphere.
From the comfort of the ship, passengers will take in vast snowy landscapes and have nightly opportunities to look for the Northern Lights. Over the course of the 13-day itinerary, the voyage includes visits to seven destinations across northern Norway, such as Alta, Máze, Tromsø and Stavanger, allowing guests to immerse themselves in regional culture and Arctic scenery.
