Edinburgh Airport Reveals Major New Terminal Expansion Plans

Edinburgh Airport (EDI) has revealed plans to expand its terminal as the first phase of a larger redevelopment program. The project will increase the size of the security screening area, add new retail space and introduce a dedicated business centre to improve services for both leisure and corporate travellers.

Airport CEO Gordon Dewar said this investment marks the start of several initiatives designed to raise Edinburgh Airport’s international profile and strengthen its competitiveness with other major UK and European airports. The expansion is intended to enhance passenger flow through security, create a wider range of shopping and dining options, and provide improved facilities for business travellers.

Construction work is scheduled to begin in October, with the enlarged security area due to open in late 2014 and the new retail zone planned for completion in 2015. The airport’s board has pledged to invest more than $233 million into the gateway over the next five years to support these and other improvements.

The terminal expansion aims to deliver a more comfortable and efficient experience at every step of the passenger journey. A larger security area will reduce queuing and speed throughput during peak periods, while the additional shops and outlets will give travellers more choice and support increased non-aeronautical revenue. The business centre will offer meeting and workspaces tailored to the needs of corporate passengers, making the airport more attractive to business travellers and airlines alike.

Edinburgh’s growth strategy reflects broader trends in airport development where improving passenger facilities, retail offerings and business services forms a key part of long-term competitiveness. By investing in terminal capacity and amenities, the airport expects to accommodate rising passenger numbers and better meet the expectations of modern travellers.

The phased timeline—starting with security enhancements, followed by retail and business facilities—allows the airport to manage construction with minimal disruption to daily operations. Passengers can expect staged improvements over the coming months and years as sections of the terminal are upgraded.

These works form part of a multi-year commitment to modernise the airport and expand its capabilities. The planned investments are intended not only to improve the traveller experience but also to support local and regional economic growth by making Edinburgh an increasingly attractive air transport hub.
