Huno.com, an independent hotel comparison site listing more than 400,000 properties worldwide, recently ran an online survey to identify the most common annoyances travelers face during hotel stays.
Respondents ranked dirty or untidy rooms as their top complaint, cited by 41 percent of those surveyed. Close behind were uncomfortable beds and poor service, which finished second and third respectively. These results suggest that cleanliness and basic comfort remain the primary expectations guests want hoteliers to meet.
By contrast, dated décor and a lack of in-room amenities ranked among the least bothersome issues. According to the survey, guests place greater value on essential standards—clean rooms, comfortable beds and attentive staff—than on cosmetic updates or extra amenities.
Responses also varied by gender. Female travelers were more likely to rate dirty accommodations as the single most important issue (48 percent of women versus 29 percent of men). Male respondents were more inclined to point to inexperienced staff and unexpected charges, such as paid WiFi, as major problems.
The survey quantified the level of annoyance for a range of common hotel issues. The results, listed with their average net response, were as follows:
Dirty and/or untidy rooms — +76%
Uncomfortable bed/poor sleep — +42%
Poor service and inexperienced staff — +28%
Hidden extras (for example, paid WiFi) — +6%
General expectations versus reality — +2%
Poor guest facilities — +2%
Difficult or poor location — -2%
Lack of in-room amenities — -18%
Dated décor and ambiance — -36%
Overall, the findings indicate hoteliers should prioritize housekeeping, bed comfort and service training. Addressing these fundamentals is likely to reduce guest complaints more effectively than focusing first on cosmetic upgrades or nonessential amenities.
