United Airlines First to Receive Boeing 787-10: Delivery Details and Timeline

United Airlines took delivery of its first Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner last week, becoming the first North American carrier to receive this model and the first airline worldwide to operate the full 787 family—787-8, 787-9 and 787-10.

The 787-10 is 18 feet longer than the 787-9, providing increased passenger and cargo capacity while maintaining strong efficiency—using approximately 20 percent less fuel compared with older widebody aircraft. United’s configuration for the 787-10 includes 44 Polaris business-class seats, 21 United Premium Plus seats, 54 Economy Plus seats and 199 economy seats.

This aircraft marks the first 787-10 delivered with United’s Polaris business-class and Premium Plus cabins already installed, offering the airline’s latest onboard products at entry into service.

Passengers will notice a range of cabin enhancements designed to improve comfort and reduce jet lag. Advanced LED lighting can simulate sunrise and sunset colors to help adjust passengers’ circadian rhythms. The in-flight entertainment system includes split-screen capability to view content and flight maps at once, a relax mode with curated videos and playlists, and accessibility features for guests with vision, hearing or mobility needs. Entertainment recommendations are tailored to flight length and passenger behavior to make content discovery easier.

The new 787-10 entered commercial service on January 7, 2019, operating between United’s Los Angeles (LAX) and Newark (EWR) hubs.

“The 787-10 is an excellent addition to United’s fleet. It offers superior fuel efficiency while providing a more comfortable customer experience onboard that allows passengers to arrive at their destinations feeling more refreshed,” said Gerry Laderman, chief financial officer of United Airlines.

“The United Airlines team is raising the bar again. With the new 787-10, United will fly the most fuel-efficient widebody jet in commercial aviation today. The larger airplane comes with more seats, more cargo capacity, and the same Dreamliner comforts that passengers prefer,” added Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of commercial sales and marketing at The Boeing Company. “We are honored that United, a leading global carrier, has placed its trust in the 787 family, carefully optimizing their network with all three Dreamliner models.”
