Munich Airport Reopens World’s Largest Stationary Wave for Surfers

Starting Sept. 16, travelers at Munich Airport can experience the world’s largest stationary wave for the sixth consecutive year. The Surf & Style event runs through Oct. 9 and is set up in the MAC Forum, Europe’s largest covered outdoor space.

Surf & Style welcomes everyone from absolute beginners to seasoned surfers. Hour-long surfing sessions run daily from 10 a.m. in three skill categories. Beginner sessions include a balance bar to help newcomers find their stance, while advanced and pro sessions are geared toward more experienced riders. Every session begins with a professional instructor-led introduction to ensure safety and proper technique.

Session prices are €19 for adults and €10 for children ages 8–14. Surfing equipment — including wetsuits, helmets and boards — is available to rent at the airport, and reservations can be made in advance.

“With Surf & Style we are bringing the carefree lifestyle of the beaches of California and Hawai’i to Munich Airport,” said Martin Korosec, head of advertising, marketing and media at Flughafen München GmbH. “This event has become a real crowd puller, and we expect even more international visitors this year since the surf event coincides with Oktoberfest.”

The event culminates in the European Championship in Stationary Wave Riding on Oct. 8–9, when more than 130 competitors are expected to take part. Spectator admission is free.

The temporary wave installation spans more than 30 feet in width and reaches nearly five feet in height. Operating hours are until 8 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and until 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
