Arrival/Check-in: I had not heard of The Sutton Place Hotel before this trip to Chicago. I was pleased to discover it sits in the heart of the Gold Coast, directly across from Gibson’s Steakhouse. The doorman greeted me warmly, and I located the front desk on my own. The receptionist was friendly and apologetic because my room was not ready; I waited only a few minutes in a comfortable but somewhat dim lobby. The décor gave a slightly dated impression, recalling the hotel’s origins as Hotel 21 East in the 1980s. (27/30)
Guest Quarters: Shortly after, I received my key and directions to my room. My suite had an unexpected layout: a duplex with the living area on the lower level and the bedroom and master bath accessed by a spiral staircase. While the space felt bright and welcoming thanks to natural light, the spiral staircase proved awkward for regular use. The bed was comfortable and the workspace generous. The bathroom was large, with a separate tub and shower, but it showed signs that an update would be beneficial. I also viewed a recently renovated standard room; it was spacious and featured rich, calming colors that felt fresh and traveler-friendly. (24/30)
Service/Amenities: The hotel’s on-site bar and restaurant, The Whiskey Bar & Grill, appeared popular with locals, which is a strong endorsement for any hotel. The gym occupies a converted suite; though compact, it includes the basic equipment needed for a quick workout between meetings. Overall, staff and amenities supported a practical and comfortable stay. (37/40)
The Experience: The Sutton Place functions well as a solid 4-star property, and its greatest asset is the location. It makes an excellent base for business or leisure travelers: exceptional dining options are within easy reach, and premier shopping is only steps away. The combination of neighborhood charm and convenient access to Chicago’s attractions makes it a reliable choice for visitors seeking comfort and convenience.
