Marriott International’s presence in Japan is expanding beyond the two upcoming Moxy Hotels announced for later this year. This summer the company will open five new resort destinations across the country, all operating under Marriott’s hotel brands and collectively offering more than 800 rooms.
These resorts vary in setting—from lakeside views at the base of Mount Fuji to traditional hot-spring towns on the Izu Peninsula—and emphasize regional character and relaxation amenities. The collection is designed to encourage travelers to explore beyond Japan’s major cities while still enjoying modern comforts and technology.
“These five dynamic resorts are going to expand the mind and spark new ways of thinking about Japan as a travel destination,” said Mike Fulkerson, vice president of brand marketing, Asia-Pacific, Marriott International. “The properties will let guests venture beyond the well-trodden metropolises and tourist hubs without compromising on modern comforts and access to technology.”
Highlighted openings include the Karuizawa Marriott Hotel in Nagano, a 136-room property focused on eco-friendly practices and hot-spring experiences, and the Nanki Shirahama Marriott Hotel, a 182-room beach resort featuring landscaped gardens, an outdoor pool and its own on-site hot springs.
Near Mount Fuji, the Fuji Marriott Hotel Lake Yamanaka will cater to visitors keen to explore nearby shrines and natural attractions. This intimate property has 105 guestrooms and also includes access to hot-spring facilities.
On the Izu Peninsula, the Izu Marriott Hotel Shuzenji offers 128 rooms in the hot-spring town of Shuzenji. The resort emphasizes health and wellness, with amenities that include a stone sauna, spa and fitness center, as well as golf and tennis facilities and hot springs.
The largest of the five openings is the Lake Biwa Marriott Hotel, a 274-room resort located outside Kyoto on the shores of Lake Biwa. Combining traditional and contemporary architecture, the hotel includes a restaurant serving local cuisine, a grand ballroom and a private chapel, making it suitable for both relaxation and special events.
These five additions will broaden Marriott’s footprint across Japan, complementing the company’s existing network. Marriott currently has 19 properties either open or in development in the country, reinforcing its commitment to offering a range of experiences—from urban stays to regional resort escapes.
