Mandarin Oriental to Open Second Japan Hotel with 3 New Setouchi Resorts

Mandarin Oriental has announced plans to develop three boutique properties in Japan under the Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi collection. Located around Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, the resorts are scheduled to open between 2027 and 2030 and will emphasize sustainability, art, culture and wellness.

“These elevated properties will enhance the region’s luxury landscape and offer a sustainability-focused experience for guests—especially those who appreciate art and nature—allowing them to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of this captivating part of Japan,” said Laurent Kleitman, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental. “The announcement also demonstrates the Group’s ongoing commitment to expanding its portfolio across Japan with truly unique, high-end, experience-driven hospitality.”

The first resort, Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi at Takamatsu, is set to open in 2027. Located on the harbor front, it will offer 92 guestrooms along with multiple restaurants and bars, and comprehensive spa and wellness facilities designed to serve both local and international guests.

Also slated for 2027 is Mandarin Oriental, Setouchi at Naoshima. This smaller resort will introduce 22 ryokan-style guestrooms in a scenic fishing village, blending traditional Japanese inn elements with Mandarin Oriental’s signature standards of service and comfort.

The third property is scheduled to open in 2030 on another island within the region. It will feature 50 guestrooms and fully immersive wellness programming tailored to help guests reconnect with nature and well-being. A private yacht service will link the three resorts, allowing guests easy and elegant access between each property.

The Setouchi region spans islands within the Seto Inland Sea, linking parts of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Known for its art islands, serene seascapes and rich cultural traditions, the area has become an appealing destination for travelers seeking a more contemplative, design- and culture-driven experience.

“Setouchi is a distinctive and special part of Japan that will appeal to discerning, curious travelers,” Kleitman added. “This relatively undiscovered region will delight our guests as they explore its many facets. Each of the three resorts will reflect its own character, environment and thoughtfully curated experiences.”
