Polish your pail and shovel: the 2014 Revere Beach National Sand Sculpting Festival, held just a few miles from Boston, runs July 18–20 and promises three days of creative fun. Last year’s event attracted more than 350,000 visitors, and this year master sand sculptors from around the world gather to compete each day beginning at 10 a.m. Competitors work within designated plots using only sand and water; judges evaluate each piece on carving quality, effective use of sand, degree of difficulty, originality, artistic impression and overall “wow” factor.
As sculptors transform the beach into an ever-changing gallery of impressive creations, the festival also offers live entertainment, vendor booths, a community village and a selection of gourmet food trucks. An interactive learning zone gives visitors a hands-on chance to learn sculpting techniques from the professionals. Families and spectators can stroll the shoreline to view the sculptures, watch the artists at work, and take part in workshops and demonstrations throughout the weekend.
Plan to stay into the evening on Saturday for a fireworks display that lights up the shore at 9 p.m., providing a dramatic finale to a day of sand art and seaside festivities. With activities for all ages, this festival is a lively summer destination for art lovers, beachgoers and families seeking a memorable day by the ocean.
