Qatar Airways is transitioning away from physical membership cards and introducing digital cards for participants in its Privilege Club loyalty program. This move aligns with broader trends in the travel industry toward mobile-first services and aims to make managing loyalty benefits simpler, faster and more convenient for members.
The digital membership card is available to Privilege Club members at all tiers and can be accessed via the airline’s Privilege Club mobile app. Functionally, the digital card mirrors the capabilities of a traditional plastic card: it identifies the member, records tier status and allows members to earn and redeem Qmiles. By keeping the membership details inside the app, Qatar Airways reduces the risk of lost or forgotten cards and streamlines common activities such as checking balances, viewing recent activity and presenting proof of status during travel.
For new entrants joining the Privilege Club at the Burgundy level, the membership card will now be issued exclusively in digital form. The same applies to nominated family members: any family member added to a principal account will receive a digital card. Privilege Club allows a principal member to nominate up to nine family members, and nominee miles are credited to the main account holder. This approach simplifies family management of loyalty benefits and avoids the need to issue multiple physical cards.
Members who join at Silver, Gold and Platinum levels will continue to have the option of receiving a physical card if they prefer, though they can also use the digital version immediately through the app. Maintaining both options for higher-tier members preserves the traditional premium feel of a physical card while providing the flexibility of a mobile-first experience.
The Privilege Club app enables members to redeem a variety of benefits and services directly from their devices. App-based redemption covers priority check-in, additional baggage allowances and discounts at Qatar Duty Free. Lounge access is available through the app for qualifying Silver, Gold and Platinum members, simplifying access procedures at airports that support digital verification of status. Members can also use the app to book awards flights on Qatar Airways and partner carriers, manage reservations and select seats where permitted.
Moving to digital cards reduces environmental impact by cutting production and distribution of plastic cards, and it supports a more integrated customer experience. The in-app card makes it easier to access account details on the go, receive targeted communications about offers and promotions, and use QR codes or barcodes where digital verification is accepted. For passengers who travel frequently, these capabilities can speed up airport processes and reduce friction when claiming benefits.
The decision reflects an industry-wide shift toward digital membership and wallet-based identification, where airlines, hotels and other travel providers increasingly rely on mobile apps to store loyalty credentials and travel documents. Qatar Airways’ rollout balances convenience and tradition by keeping physical cards available for select tiers while encouraging broader adoption of a secure, app-based membership model.
Overall, the move to digital membership cards is designed to make the Privilege Club easier to use and harder to lose, while providing the same range of benefits members have come to expect. By consolidating membership management into the Privilege Club app, Qatar Airways aims to create a faster, more responsive experience for members managing miles, rewards and travel privileges.
