Cycling Tuscany: Exploring the White Roads on Two Wheels

If you’re planning to escape winter, consider an eight‑day cycling journey along the famed white gravel roads of Tuscany, following the Strade Bianche routes that cross the Chianti region. Known largely as the L’Eroica route, many of these ancient white roads are recognized as historic landmarks. The new tour is offered by PLUS Tours, a collaboration between cultural cycling specialists Tourissimo and historic‑route experts Ride and Seek.

Riders get a deep immersion in Tuscany’s history and heritage, with ample opportunities to taste local wines such as Chianti and the celebrated Brunello di Montalcino produced nearby. The itinerary winds through the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Val d’Orcia and visits hilltop towns like Montepulciano and Montalcino, traversing undulating vineyards and several medieval hamlets. The program also includes a guided walking tour of Siena, time to explore the Maremma Natural Reserve, and relaxing soaks in thermal springs at Bagno Vignoni and Petriolo.

Culinary highlights are an integral part of the experience, with leisurely stops for espresso and cappuccino and chances to sample regional specialties. The scheduled dates are Sept. 14–21, 2019, and prices start at $3,995 per person. Accommodations are in boutique hotels and agriturismo properties that reflect Tuscan character. Daily rides are optional and vary from about 20 to 70 miles, featuring some steep climbs and scenic descents suitable for riders with mixed abilities.

The tour emphasizes a balanced pace that blends active cycling with cultural discovery. Routes along the Strade Bianche favor unpaved, compacted gravel that showcases rural Tuscany’s character and connects lesser‑known villages, vineyards and olive groves. Support is provided throughout each day, and non‑riding activities are available for those who prefer to rest or explore on foot.

Participants can expect small group sizes, knowledgeable local guides, and curated experiences that highlight regional artisans, food producers and winemakers. Evenings focus on relaxed meals at local trattorie and farmhouses where traditional Tuscan cuisine is paired with estate wines. This combination of scenic riding, authentic culinary experiences and cultural visits aims to deliver a memorable, well‑rounded Tuscan escape.
