Washington Reagan National Airport’s outdated and crowded Gate 35/35X will soon be replaced by a completely new concourse.
Today, passengers wait at Gate 35/35X before descending an escalator to buses that ferry them to smaller commuter aircraft. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is leading a roughly $400 million project to eliminate this congested gate and create a more efficient, spacious connection between the terminal and aircraft boarding areas.
This renovation is part of a broader airport modernization program with an estimated cost of $1 billion. In addition to the new concourse, the plan expands retail and dining options located beyond security. Currently, most food and shopping choices are concentrated in the main hall before security; the redevelopment will bring more concessions into the post-security zone so travelers can access them more easily while waiting for flights.
Other elements of the project include a new parking garage across from the airport entrance and an updated lease-sharing arrangement between Reagan National and Washington Dulles International Airport. Altogether, the upgrades aim to reduce congestion, improve passenger flow, and enhance the traveler experience at the airport.
