Strolling across the lush grounds of Fairmont Orchid on the Island of Hawai’i, I could hear the ocean long before I saw its deep blue shimmer. The sound of the surf blended with the scent of plumeria and the sway of palm trees, while warm sun and breeze settled over me. As I followed my therapist to a private, oceanfront hale—one of the spa’s open-air treatment huts—I relaxed into a state of ho‘omaha, the Hawaiian word for rest and renewal.
Inside the hale my therapist began the detoxifying ‘Awa Earth & Fire treatment, warming coconut oil to nourish and hydrate my skin, then using a blend of Hawaiian botanicals with warm lava rocks to ease away tension. With the Pacific lapping against the lava-and-coral coastline just outside and seabirds calling nearby, the setting and the therapy worked together to deepen my calm.
The spa’s menu highlights island-inspired treatments that celebrate local ingredients and time-honored techniques. Many offerings draw on generations-old Hawaiian healing arts, such as lomilomi massage, a royal tradition designed to restore mana—spiritual energy, power, and balance.
“Our spa presents treatments that invite guests to connect with the ‘āina (land) and experience its powerful energy,” said Roselia Flandes, director of Spa Without Walls. “Both therapists and guests appreciate the use of locally sourced ingredients and traditional Hawaiian healing methods; they create authentic, meaningful experiences rooted in culture.”
Flandes explains that the signature ‘Awa Earth & Fire combines Hawaiian-grown ‘awa, a medicinal herb, with volcanic clay to promote profound relaxation. Another favorite, the Hiwa-Hiwa massage, pairs volcanic mud from Hawai’i Island with a lomilomi-style massage, offering guests an indulgent, restorative way to enjoy their time on the Big Island.
Other Hawaiian-inspired options include Kahinu Clear Mind, which uses coconut oil—long valued across Polynesia—gently streamed along the forehead and massaged into the scalp before a calming neck, shoulder, hand, and foot massage. The Big Island Foot Ritual exfoliates with Hawaiian sugar cane, applies a healing herb-and-volcanic-nutrient mask, and includes a neck, shoulder, arm, and hand massage with coconut and lemongrass body butter. A warm-lava-rock foot massage with point-specific techniques helps release tension and restore mana.
A seasonal spring offering, the Sweet Relaxation Honey Massage, uses a honey-infused moisturizing cream made with honey from the resort’s on-site hives. The honey delivers antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory benefits while softening and nourishing the skin with antioxidant-rich properties.
For a more extensive experience, the Fairmont Orchid Ali’i Royal Experience combines two popular Polynesian treatments—‘Awa Earth & Fire and Kahinu Clear Mind—into a 110-minute journey of relaxation.
