The Plaza Hotel New York: Luxury Stay & Iconic NYC Experience

Arrival/Check-In: “Welcome to The Plaza.” That greeting never loses its charm. Pulling up to the curb of this iconic New York City hotel immediately signals an elegant, memorable stay. The $450 million renovation and restoration completed between 2005 and 2008 altered the original lobby layout, making it somewhat less dramatic than in the past, but it introduced a welcoming Champagne Bar. The Champagne Bar functions like a cozy bistro where guests and visitors gather to enjoy Champagne and specialty cocktails, savor a cappuccino, nibble light bites or indulge in desserts. It’s tempting to linger there on the way to the front desk.

Guest Quarters: My two-room suite, clad in creams, beiges and golds, reflected a Louis XV-inspired décor that felt warm and refined. The sitting room offered two armchairs and a sofa that converts to a queen bed, centered on an oval coffee table. A generous desk sat before double windows, providing a comfortable workspace with views of the city below. A large wall-mounted flat-screen television anchored the space. Near the entrance, a powder room added convenience. A marble bar top was set with silver service, including an ice bucket and tray, while a butler’s pantry housed a microwave, a wet bar and an under-counter refrigerator.

Two doorways on either side of the television led into a delightful king-sized bedroom with a cozy seating alcove, complete with a comfortable reading chair and ottoman. Nightstands flanked the bed, which faced a long bureau and another wall-mounted television. A dressing room opened to a large closet on one side and a magnificent bathroom on the other. The bath featured a deep soaking tub and striking 24-karat gold-plated fixtures mounted on white marble vanities. Toiletries were supplied by Caudalíe, the same brand used in the on-site spa.

Services/Amenities: The on-site fitness center is somewhat tucked away, but it’s worth finding. Equipment includes ellipticals and treadmills; recumbent, upright and e-Spin bikes; free weights and Cybex machines. The Caudalíe Vinothérapie Spa on property provides a restful retreat and a full menu of treatments. Dining options include the famed Palm Court, known for its Afternoon Tea, and the Champagne Bar for lighter fare. The Rose Club, located a short flight of stairs above the lobby, is ideal for people-watching over a cocktail or engaging in conversation around the bar. The legendary Oak Bar was closed during my visit, though plans were reportedly in place to reopen the hotel’s signature bar. Some in-room items, such as a coffeemaker, are available upon request. Complimentary in-room WiFi is provided to Fairmont President’s Club members (membership is free), and guests receive one complimentary bottle of water at check-in.

The Experience: There is a timeless allure to The Plaza: classic service, elegant surroundings and a sense of being part of New York’s storied hospitality tradition. The hotel balances historic charm with modern comforts, making it a quintessential choice for visitors seeking a luxurious stay in the heart of Manhattan.
