Ethiopian Airlines has launched its first services to South America, completing its presence on the five inhabited continents. The carrier now operates three weekly flights between Addis Ababa (ADD) and the Brazilian cities of São Paulo (GRU) and Rio de Janeiro (GIG) using Boeing 787 Dreamliners. These services operate via Lomé, Togo, where Ethiopian maintains a secondary hub.
The new Brazil routes expand Ethiopian’s global network and improve connectivity across multiple regions. Passengers traveling from South America can connect through Addis Ababa to an extensive schedule that includes 28 weekly flights to four destinations in China, 14 weekly flights to major cities in India, daily services to Lebanon, five weekly flights to Tel Aviv and nearly daily connections to 45 destinations across Africa, according to Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. With these additions, the carrier now serves 75 destinations across five continents.
This expansion reflects Ethiopian Airlines’ strategy of linking Africa with key markets in Asia and the Americas, leveraging its modern long-haul fleet to offer competitive connectivity and schedule options. The use of the 787 Dreamliner supports longer routes with greater fuel efficiency and passenger comfort, while the Lomé transit point provides practical routing for passengers and cargo traveling between South America, Africa and onward to Asia and the Middle East.
Passengers planning travel between Brazil and Africa or onward connections to Asia and the Middle East should check Ethiopian Airlines’ schedules and booking options for current frequencies, layover information and baggage policies. As route networks evolve, travelers may benefit from the airline’s increased intercontinental connections and coordinated schedules at its African hubs.
