London’s Tube now runs 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays. The round-the-clock service currently operates on the Victoria and Central lines, with plans to extend late-night operations to the Northern, Jubilee and Piccadilly lines this fall. The primary aim is to better serve people enjoying the city’s nightlife, while also supporting late-shift workers such as nurses and security staff.
During overnight hours, trains will run roughly every 10 minutes through Central London, and fares will be charged at standard off-peak rates. Oyster and contactless cards will remain valid until 4:29 a.m. the following day. To maintain safety, British transport police will be deployed on board — with around 100 officers available to respond if needed.
London Underground officials estimate that, once the five lines offer 24-hour service on weekends, about 200,000 passengers will use the network each weekend. Authorities also expect the extensions to boost the local economy and create jobs: forecasts suggest roughly 2,200 new positions will be supported as a result.
