Staying Safe During Meetings in Mexico City: Essential Tips

“Is Mexico City safe?” This question comes up often when people consider visiting or moving to Mexico’s capital.

“Mexico City is one of the safest large cities in the world,” says Margot Lee Shetterly, president and founder of Mexico Meetings Network, who lived in the city for three years and continues to commute there. Her view reflects improvements in public safety that have been made in recent years.

Since the introduction of the extensive C4 security system in October 2011, crime in Mexico City has dropped by 21.4 percent. The city leads the country in crime reduction and now reports lower crime rates than several major international cities, including Chicago, New York and Rio de Janeiro.

The C4 system is among the most advanced of its kind. It comprises more than 15,000 cameras installed across the city and connected to a central operations center staffed by over 1,300 trained security personnel. These cameras provide continuous monitoring and enable faster responses to incidents.

Many cameras are mounted on light posts and include a call button that allows anyone to reach security staff directly. This network supports real-time coordination for a wide range of situations, from criminal incidents to natural disasters and medical emergencies. City officials can receive briefings on significant events within minutes, improving decision-making and response times. Plans are in place to expand the system with an additional 5,000 cameras over the following six years.

“Mexico City adopted some strategies similar to those used in New York,” Shetterly notes. “The focus has been on quality-of-life issues and addressing the root causes of insecurity, rather than only reacting to isolated incidents.” That broader approach—combining technology, trained personnel and targeted policies—has contributed to safer neighborhoods and a more secure urban environment.

When considering safety in Mexico City, it’s useful to balance recent crime statistics and public-safety investments with common-sense precautions: stay aware of your surroundings, use trusted transportation options, and follow local guidance. With its cultural attractions, vibrant neighborhoods and improving safety record, Mexico City continues to attract visitors and residents alike.
