Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, located just north of Copenhagen, presents several notable exhibitions opening this year. On March 1 the museum debuts Illumination, a collection of more than 50 classic and contemporary paintings, photographs, sculptures and installations that investigate the theme of light. Acquired over the past three years, the works include pieces by internationally recognized artists such as Andreas Gursky, Franz West, Cindy Sherman, Rineke Dijkstra, Julie Mehretu, Sterling Ruby, Alex Da Corte, Roni Horn and Tacita Dean.
If you will be in Denmark before March, the museum currently features contemporary film and video works in Fire Under Snow, on view through May 5, with new pieces by artists including Rineke Dijkstra, Ed Atkins and Candice Breitz. From February 4 through June 5 the focus shifts to kinetic and optical art with Eye Attack, described as a visual experimental laboratory. Combining technology, illusion and the psychology of perception, this exhibition showcases work by more than 40 artists, among them Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley.
Reaching Louisiana from Copenhagen city center is straightforward. The Copenhagen Card covers admission to the Louisiana and 73 other museums, and also includes public transportation, including the commuter train that serves the museum. This makes a visit convenient whether you travel by train, bus or other public transit.
Whether your interest lies in contemporary photography, experimental video, or perceptual art, Louisiana’s current and upcoming exhibitions offer a broad and engaging program that highlights both emerging and established international artists.
